The Importance of Digital Technology

The importance of digital technology in modern learning must not be underestimated. In an ever changing and growing digital world our children need to be connected, confident and active learners. As future teachers we must be aware of the digital technology available, and remember that things have changed since we attended school. Gary O’Sullivan claims that “there is growing research that suggests a disconnection can often lead to dissatisfaction from pupils with regard to the relevance of what and how they study at school.” (O’Sullivan, 2012, p.167). If our students are not being engaged in a relevant way school can become a place that they fear or dislike.

  1. Hi Toby,
great blog! With regard to your quote, I know a family which is completely disconnected, sometimes I relish their peace and tranquility, especially living by the beach, where the little ones can play and experiment. Other days I am well aware that their teenage son hates not being connected to other teenagers around the world and probably feels quite isolated. I bet he enjoys every minute he can use the internet at school!
